What is Community Place Bureau?

Meeting people and socializing is a wonderful part of real life.

The society server, "Community Place Bureau", creates a network world where you can actually meet people in virtual space.

Using Sony's VRML browser "Community Place", users from all over the world will be able to share a 3D scene, see each other and 'chat' with each other.

"Community Place Bureau" works by representing each user as an 'avatar' which is their virtual representation in the virtual world. Each Sony browser works with the "Community Place Bureau" to track all the users in the shared space and to display their avatars to other users. So, if you're walking down a busy city block, it's more than likely that you'll bump into friends.

When you do, just pop up the text chat window and chat away.

How to use the shared chat worlds

To use the shared chat worlds, here's all you have to do:

Download the latest version of the Community Place Browser (Beta 3).

Once you've configured NetScape to use Community Place as your helper application for VRML files then you can start the chat world either from the release note page or by loading, from netscape, the following file.

C:\Program Files\Sony\CyberPassage\entry\models\main.wrl

Remember, the file will only be here if you used the default setup setiings, if not, go to wherever you placed the Community Place download files and locate the "entry\models\main.wrl" file.

After that you can explore the chat world, interact with any objects that have behavior (look for the cursor changing to a hand) and chat to other users using the chat window.
